House of the Dragon season 3 is in production now, and star Olivia Cooke gives an update on when filming of the new episodes wraps. The Game of Thrones spinoff executive-produced by Ryan Condal premiered on HBO in 2022 and became a ratings success. House of the Dragon season 2 premiered in 2024 and the series was quickly renewed for season 3.
During Liam Crowley of ScreenRant’s interview with Olivia Cooke for Prime Video’s The Girlfriend, the House of the Dragon star, who portrays Queen Alicent Hightower, offered an update on when filming of season 3 wraps. Cooke called House of the Dragon season 3 “massive,” and teased the “practical, huge stunt work” coming in the new episodes. Read Olivia’s quote below:
Olivia Cooke: We started in April, so we are done in October. We’re over halfway and it’s massive.
ScreenRant: Yeah. (Series creator) Ryan [Condal] says the scope of this one is like, oh boy.
Olivia Cooke: It is actually ridiculous. It’s actually ridiculous and it’s a lot of practical, huge stunt work. It’s mad.
When House Of The Dragon Season 3 Wraps & When It Premieres On HBO
As Olivia Cooke explained, House of the Dragon season 3 began filming in April, although production mounted in March, and is expected to wrap in October. Cooke says House of the Dragon‘s filming is “over halfway” completed. House of the Dragon primarily films in the United Kingdom, though parts of season 1 were filmed in Spain.
Once filming wraps, House of the Dragon season 3 will go into post-production, where the episodes will be edited, scored, and numerous visual effects shots will be added. HBO has not made a formal announcement of when in 2026 House of the Dragon season 3 premieres, but the two prior seasons bowed in the summer, so summer 2026 is a reasonable guess.
Our Take On House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Filming Wrap
House of the Dragon season 3 will be a full-blown war between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Queen Alicent’s forces, and the carnage will cost both families dearly. House of the Dragon season 2 saw Alicent’s son, King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), gravely injured. Of course, Rhaenyra suffered the death of her son, Lucerys Velaryon (Elliott Grihault) at the end of House of the Dragon season 1.
Another Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will also premiere on HBO in early 2026.
Olivia Cooke teasing that House of the Dragon season 3 is “mad” tantalizingly hints at the carnage and bloodshed to come. At the end of House of the Dragon season 2, Rhaenyra committed her faction, the Blacks, to war against Queen Alicent’s side, the Greens. The brutality and violence to come in House of the Dragon season 3, known “the Dance of the Dragons,” will be unleashed next year.
