In June 2021, news of yet another adaptation of a masterpiece dark fantasy manga made the rounds with Kevin McMullin and Sony’s Columbia Pictures attached. Made in Abyss, created by Akihito Tsukushi and serialized since 2012, was set to be adapted into a live-action film produced by Roy Lee and Masi Okaat the time; however, reports about the project have been scarce. Now, almost five years later, a new project is in the works inspired by thefan-favorite manga and scheduled for a 2026 release.
As recently announced by the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Made in Abyss, the manga will be adapted into an anime film series, with the first part titled Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery,but it doesn’t have an exact premiere date. Awakening Mystery serves as a sequel to the second season of the TV anime, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which aired from July 6 to September 28, 2022. A sequel to Season 2 was announced on January 15, 2023, but few details were revealed at the time.
For Awakening Mystery, Kinema Citrus will continue to be in charge of production as with the previous series, with new characters making an appearance as seen in the teaser visual below. These new characters are Tepaste and Clavali, “who will appear at the explorer’s favorite bar, Nagarakutei.” Masayuki Kojima will also be back as director alongside returning writer Hideyuki Kurata and character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda, as well as the cast from the TV anime.
‘Made in Abyss’ Is Still One of the Best Anime Series
The TV anime adaptation of Made in Abyss debuted on July 7, 2017, and ended its first season after thirteen riveting episodes on September 29, that year. Season 2 also comprised thirteen episodes, which, along with Season 1, were well-received by critics and viewers globally. It is also widely considered to be one of the best anime series of the 2010s.
For those new to the enchanting Made in Abyss universe, it is a fantasy about the Abyss, a huge hole inhabited by strange and bizarre creatures and containing precious relics that modern humans cannot create. It depicts the adventures of Riko, a young girl who dreams of becoming a great cave explorer like her mother and unraveling the mysteries of the Abyss, and Reg, a robot in the form of a young boy whom she meets.
