Mark Wahlberg’s 2025 Team-Up With Mel Gibson Is Back on the Streaming Charts Despite Being a Box Office Flop

Right now, the 2025 box office is arguably looking the best it has all year. The recent arrival of Liam Neeson‘s reboot of The Naked Gunadded some much-needed comedic quality to a stacked lineup full of famous IPs, with the likes of James Gunn‘s Superman; The Fantastic Four: First Steps, led by Pedro Pascal; Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth; and much more proving hugely successful. However, the year didn’t always look this way, with the first few months of 2025 littered with box office strugglers.

One such struggling entry to the early-year box office was Flight Risk, which teamed up Mark Wahlberg with director Mel Gibson for an airborne action thriller that breathlessly brought a high-stakes battle of wills and trust to global screens. However, reportedly produced for $25 million, Flight Risk flopped at the box office with a global haul of $48.7 million, split between $29.7 million domestically and a further $19 million from overseas markets. Despite this big-screen frustration, it is the small screen where Flight Risk has found its home, consistently returning to the streaming charts, most recently on Monday, August 4.

Officially, at the time of writing, Flight Risk is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Starz in the U.S., joining an impressive list of other titles currently proving popular. Flight Risk is the third most-streamed movie, losing out to second-placed Happy Gilmore, which is a hit again thanks to the recent Netflix release of Adam Sandler’s legacy sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, and the current first-placed 1992, directed by Ariel Vromen. In the television ranks, Starz’s current biggest hit is the return of BMFfor its third season.

‘Flight Risk’ Failed to Impress Critics

Despite finally finding its feet on streaming,Flight Risk‘s turbulent time at the box office certainly wasn’t helped by a poor critical response. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie received just 29% from critics, with the acting talent of Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace unable to save this flight from a crash landing. In his review of the movie, Collider’s Jeff Ewing awarded it a poor 5/10, saying, “Some performances are far better than others, and they aren’t all consistently memorable or engaging enough to carry the film over the finish line. That’s particularly true in light of plotting that’s sometimes repetitive, nonsensical, or underdeveloped. There’s surely promise in the premise, but Flight Risk is one journey that doesn’t quite get off the ground.”
