Warning: Contains Spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #19!Marvel just acknowledged something fans have known forever: that the X-Menhave serious sex appeal. In a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of their heroes’ demographic appeal, the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men was frank about the “thirstiness” of its audience. Still, this is nothing that long-time readers didn’t know about Marvel’s mutants and their fans already.
Uncanny X-Men #19, by the creative team of Gail Simone and David Marquez, introduces Rogue’s New Orleans-based squad to eccentric Mayor Sappora, who shares her vision for the team’s future.
Mayor Sappora has done her homework on the X-Men, and as she explains her research on the team’s passionate fans, one thing becomes clear: the X-franchise is unabashedly embracing its “horny” side.
The X-Men Shout Out Their “Horny” Fans In A Hilarious In-Universe Look At Their Demographic Appeal
Uncanny X-Men #19, By The Creative Team Of Gail Simone and David Marquez; Available Now From Marvel Comics
While the Mayor details how the various X-Men team members test with different types of groups, the character makes a point to call out specifically Rogue’s appeal to both “horny dudes” and “horny women”. However, the point could be extended to many of the franchise’s most popular heroes, especially since the X-Men have been considered Marvel’s horniest characters in canon.
Marvel’s mutants and their adventures have taken on a soap opera quality for decades, with iconic romances, steamy hookups, and shocking affairs setting the pages of Marvel Comics ablaze. Although certain X-Men costumes and suits have faced criticism for being too revealing, particularly for bold characters like Emma Frost, plenty of die-hard X-Men fans fully embrace the franchise’s freaky nature.
Mayor Sappora’s demographic breakdown in Uncanny X-Men #19 is a funny way for writer Gail Simone to reference various pockets of X-fandom, with other groups primarily drawn to Nightcrawler, Jubilee, or Rogue and Gambit as a couple. The scene works as a playful wink to fans who can relate, but also sets up some interesting commentary on exploitation.
Marvel Comics Continues To Embrace X-Men’s Potential As Its “Thirstiest” Franchise
The Publisher Isn’t Trying To Dampen The Accusations
By unapologetically nudging its “horny” audience, Marvel makes it clear that it isn’t afraid to celebrate the X-Men’s sex appeal. Many of the X-franchise’s adult characters have been the universe’s hottest heroes for decades now, and after this scene and Emma Frost’s recent response to costume criticisms, the X-Men won’t be shying away from that fact anytime soon.
Although the X-Men’s ability to test well based on sex appeal is a cold hard fact, Uncanny X-Men #19 also makes a broader point about their universal appeal to many different kinds of people. Still, it seems that the X-Men should continue to maintain a particularly risque reputation among Marvel Comics heroes.
