As Henry Cavill gears up to begin production on his Highlander reboot with Russell Crowe and Chad Stahelski, the highest-grossing movie of his career has become a global streaming hit. Cavill stars alongside Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the 2016 superhero movie pitting the Man of Steel against The Dark Knight with Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) right between them. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently streaming on HBO Max both in the United States and globally, where it’s become one of the most popular movies for the streamer in countries such as France, Spain, and even Thailand. Batman v Superman grossed $874 million at the global box office against a hefty $250 million budget, and the film earned a “Rotten” 28% from critics and 63% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the second of Zack Snyder’s DCEU movies after he previously introduced Henry Cavill as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel. Snyder’s vision for the DCEU was a much darker one that either resonated heavily with fans or not at all. Part of what has been pushing viewers to revisit former DCEU movies has been the recent release of James Gunn’s Superman, the first movie in his new DCU that stars David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. They say comparison is the thief of joy, but it’s only natural after watching Superman to go back and revisit former outings like Batman v Superman to see how they compare. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Gal Gadot, and Scoot McNairy.
Has James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Grossed More than ‘Man of Steel’?
James Gunn’s Superman has passed Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel at the domestic box office. Cavill’s outing finished its run with $291 million domestically, and Gunn’s film has collected $299 million in less than a month. However, Man of Steel grossed $376 million internationally to Superman’s current $213 million international total, which leaves it with much ground to cover if it’s going to catch Man of Steel globally. Superman is still performing well as it heads into its fourth full weekend in theaters, but the arrival of The Fantastic Four: First Steps will only make it more difficult to reach its ultimate goal.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of the most popular movies in the world on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Cavill’s future projects.
