Ryan Gosling Enters Deep Space in First 5 Minutes From His Highly-Anticipated Sci-Fi Epic

Ryan Gosling set the world on fire earlier this month with the release of the new Project Hail Mary trailer, and now the film just got another exciting look. Amazon MGM debuted new footage, including the first five minutes, from Project Hail Mary at San Diego Comic-Con, showing never-before-seen looks as Gosling as former-scientist-turned-school-teacher Ryland Grace, as well as his confidants Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) and Annie Shapiro (Liz Kingsman). The first Project Hail Mary trailer shattered records, earning over 400 million views during its first week — the most of any original film, ever. Drew Goddard wrote the script for Project Hail Mary, which is based on the Andy Weir-penned novel of the same name. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, famous for their work on Into and Across the Spider-Verse, are directing.

The first five minutes of the highly anticipated sci-fi epic sees Gosling’s Ryland Grace, now beareded and disheveled, being unzipped from a body bag while stationed in outer space. After being startled by a robot that asks him to answer what 2 plus 2 is, we can see Grace is delirious, and it’s easy to see why. We soon learn he was put into a medically induced coma, and when he tries to find his fellow crew members, he learns that none of them survived this expedition into space. It’s a grim start to his space-age journey, but one that will hopefully lead to discoveries that Grace couldn’t possibly dream of.

Fans of classic space sci-fi movies like Interstellar, The Martian, and Ad Astra are likely to enjoy Project Hail Mary, both the upcoming film and Weir’s novel. Weir also wrote The Martian, the book that Matt Damon’s hit 2015 sci-fi film is based on. Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a once-legendary scientist who was disgraced from academia for controversial opinions on alien life. Ryland is called back to the world of astronomy when Earth’s sun comes under attack by mysterious space algae known as Astrophage that is affecting every nearby sun, except Tau Ceti. He and Eva Stratt (Hüller) begin work on Project Hail Mary, which aims to send a ship to Tau Ceti to figure out why its sun isn’t impacted. Project Hail Mary, the novel, currently sits at a 4.5/5 on Goodreads with over 800,000 ratings.

What’s Next for Ryan Gosling after ‘Project Hail Mary’?

Gosling has one major project on deck after starring in Project Hail Mary. He’s been set to lead Star Wars: Starfighter, the Star Wars film from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. Gosling and Levy took the stage at Star Wars Celebration earlier this year to promote the film, which is coming on May 28, 2027. Mia Goth has since joined the cast. Gosling will also star opposite Will Ferrell in Tough Guys, an upcoming comedy following two criminals who leave the criminal underworld behind. Gosling has hailed Step Brothers as his favorite movie, so starring opposite Ferrell is likely a career moment for him.

Project Hail Mary soars into theaters on March 20, 2026. Check out the new footage from the film above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage.
