Anime fans have little to complain about this summer. A slate of returning and new titles are commanding the streaming charts, and now that Netflix has dominated the anime realm, it’s possible that this type of release will only become more frequent. One of the new titles that debuted on the platform is Tougen Anki, a new anime series that kicked off its first season earlier this month and is only now taking over the streamer’s charts, per FlixPatrol.
The series centers around a young boy who discovers he is a type of demon called Oni. Shiki Ichinose (voiced by Kazuki Ura in the Original Japanese, and by Zeno Robinson in the English dub) quickly finds out that being an Oni is not enough. He has to train hard if he wants to be able to fight other demons, so he enrolls in the Oni Agency, where he meets several fighters like him. Despite his personal motivation, he enters the Oni world in the middle of a war between his kind and a massive enemy called Momotarou — so he needs to divide his attention between getting what he wants and joining the fight with demons like himself.
Tougen Anki is based on a manga series created by Yura Urushibara. The series’ thrilling fights and impressive visuals are handled by Studio Hibari, the animation studio responsible for bringing to life titles like Classroom of the Elite, High Card, Danganronpa, and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. The new series is also available to stream on Crunchyroll, but on Netflix it managed to rake in 2 million views in just one week, outperforming the global numbers of other non-English shows like Squid Game Season 2, steamy Spanish teen drama Olympo, and Netflix’s hit anime The Summer Hikaru Died.
The Summer of Anime Keeps on Giving
Tougen Anki is just one title from a slate of new anime that’s exciting fans of Japanese animation. Other new titles that are standing out include dystopian thriller Gachiakuta, Sakamoto Days, The Water Magician, Night of the Living Cat, Leviathan, and Hotel Inhumans. Aside from those, the anime summer also features returning fan-favorite titles like DanDaDan Season 2, Kaiju No.8 Season 2, Dr. Stone: Science Future Part 2, and My Dress-up Darling Season 2. It’s an exciting season to be an anime fan, and there’s plenty more coming until the end of the year — including the highly anticipated theatrical release of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and the final season of My Hero Academia.
You can stream Tougen Anki on Netflix now.
