“Go F*** Yourself”: Stephen Colbert Responds To Donald Trump Celebrating The Late Show’s Cancellation

Fallout from last week’s shock cancelation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has taken another twist, with Colbert taking aim at President Donald Trump. Following the surprise announcement last week, Trump took to social media to celebrate the show being canceled, even adding that Jimmy Kimmel’s show might be next.

Colbert addressed Trump via The Late Show‘s monologue on July 21, and he didn’t pull any punches. He started by responding to the President’s claims that he is untalented and then defending Kimmel. Colbert also included a short but strong message against Trump. Watch the full monologue below:

What This Means For The Late Show’s Cancelation

Colbert Isn’t Taking This Lying Down

The cancelation of The Late Show after 30 years came with controversy, with many believing it was due to Colbert’s vocal opposition to Trump, and the President potentially using the leverage of the CBS/Paramount Global and Skydance merger to remove the show from the air, as well as targeting other late-night talk show hosts.

Stephen Colbert’s Cancellation Sounds A Terrifying Death Toll For Late Night TV

The cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert sends a chilling message to the rest of late night, financially and politically.

However, it doesn’t seem like Colbert is going to take the criticisms lightly, as he has no issues with firing back at Trump for his comments. A veteran of the industry, Colbert is no stranger to making these kinds of commentaries. He started his career as a correspondent on The Daily Show With John Stewart before spearheading the critically-acclaimed The Colbert Report.

Moving forward, this paves the way for Colbert to be bolder in his takes as he enters the final several months of The Late Show. Oliver himself said that he’s excited to see what the CBS late-night offering comes up with knowing that they have nothing to lose anymore, given that they are already canceled.

The Comedy Legend Will Be Fine

Colbert helped cement the legacy of The Late Show, and his loss in the late-night space once The Late Show wraps up next year will undoubtedly be felt across CBS. Interestingly, Colbert himself seems pretty sanguine about the process, and making light of the situation epitomizes his approach to comedy.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Colbert, but it’s unlikely Trump’s comments will bother him much. He should have no shortage of options to help further his career, and The Late Show‘s strong ratings made Colbert the king of late-night.

Still, the cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is a massive loss to CBS and the TV space in general.

While the landscape for talk shows is currently precarious, there is no doubt this comedy icon will continue to be successful in whatever he pursues next. Still, the cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is a massive loss to CBS and the TV space in general.
