Now that James Gunn’s Supermanis flying high during its second weekend in cinemas, the wait is nearly over for the second part of what’s grown to become one of the most beloved DC-centered productions. We’re just one month out from the August 21 arrival of the sophomore installment of Gunn’s Peacemaker, and to say that fans are excited would be an understatement. With John Cena’s titular anti-hero set to make a return alongside other familiar faces including Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Freddie Stroma, audiences are stoked to see what transpires after the absolutely bonkers Season 1 finale played out well over three years ago.
Thanks to an exciting trailer released earlier this year, we now know that legends will clash, as not only will Peacemaker come face-to-face with the likes of Superman’s Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), but that he’ll also do some soul-searching of his own when he does a little dimension hopping and meets another version of himself. Since the teaser dropped, fans have been eager to learn more about why and how two versions of Peacemaker will share center stage in the upcoming season, with many pointing to the likelihood that it will be a blend of the DCEU of yesteryear and Gunn’s newly formed DCU.
During a recent chat with Rolling Stone, Gunn acknowledged that the next set of episodes will in fact include “two dimensions,” but teased that it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s tying the two universes together, sharing,
“People are realizing that Peacemaker Season Two is about two dimensions, and that’s really the core of the show. But it’s not as if one of these is old DCEU and one’s DCU. That’s dealt with in a different way, very upfront in a season where most everything in Season One is canon and some things are not.”
A Canon Explanation Is on the Way
If you’re wondering what Gunn considers to be canon and what will be left behind fully, fear not, as the filmmaker previously revealed plans for a Peacemaker podcast to do just that. To better shed light on what he and the rest of the team view as proper canon, Gunn teased an upcoming podcast that will dig into the Season 1 episodes and fully break down what will flow into Season 2 and what won’t, adding,
“And in fact, I did a podcast with [actors] Steve Agee and Jen Holland. And we did every episode ofPeacemaker, and in those episodes, I talk about what’s canon and what’s not. I basically chip off little things from Peacemaker Season One that aren’t canon, like Aquaman. But most of the stuff is canon.”
Season 1 of Peacemaker is now streaming on HBO Max.
