Elmo’s in big trouble. On Sunday, the beloved children’s icon of Sesame Street and host of The Not-Too-Late Show landed in hot water when multiple posts filled with expletives, antisemitic slurs, and other racist comments went out through the character’s X account. The usually upbeat and uplifting account of the red monster also shared anti-Donald Trump sentiments, particularly relating to his relationship with Jeffrey Epsteinand the recent announcement by the Justice Department and FBI that no such evidence of the rumored “client list” exists. A spokesperson from Sesame Workshop has since confirmed that the account, which is verified and has over 600,000 followers, was hacked and that they are working to restore full control.

Screenshots of the now-deleted posts apparently show calls for violence against Jews and other disturbing speech from Elmo’s account that would even occasionally copy his manner of speaking in the third person. “Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts,” the spokesperson told CNN after the incident. Needless to say, it’s a stark departure from the character’s usual posts, which include positive affirmations and generally wholesome content. As of now, the account is back to normal with Elmo’s latest post showing him alongside his four-legged friend, Tango.
