Prime Video’s new action series Ballard has already proven a hit for Maggie Q, but for audiences looking for another great performance from the actor, Maggie Q’s 2010 TV series is a great next watch. After being introduced in the Bosch: Legacy finale, Maggie Q’s LAPD detective Renée Ballard has returned as the head of the cold case department.
Ballard‘s cast is great from episode 1, as is their cold case investigation. The plot heats up quickly and keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, leading into Ballard season 1’s ending. Ballard season 2 has not been confirmed yet, but while waiting for a renewal, Maggie Q’s forgotten action series gave her a similar character.

Maggie Q’s Performance Earned The Series Praise
15 years before taking on the lead role in Ballard, Maggie Q played the lead role in the CW series Nikita. The action thriller series follows a young woman intent on destroying the secret agency that created her and ran from 2010-2013. The series also served as a remake of the 1990 French movie La Femme Nikita.
In Nikita, Maggie Q stars as Nikita Mears, a former agent of the secret government organization Division, which trains spies and assassins. However, after Division assassinated her fiancé, Nikita turned on the agency and went into hiding. The series largely focuses on the period after her reemergence and attempts to bring down Division.
It is slightly darker in tone than some of its genre counterparts, and Q’s Nikita is a strong, compelling character.
While numerous spy shows were running in the early 2010s and plenty more since, Nikita is well worth a watch. It should go without saying that both Nikita and Renée Ballard are strong female characters, but more than that, each woman has a sense of right and wrong, even in a job that can blur that line. When those around them betray what’s right, they step in, making for nuanced performances from Q and very intriguing shows.
Renée Ballard and Nikita Mears are both entertaining characters and create an interesting career progression for Maggie Q. While she established with her first TV role that she could more than handle the strong, suave spy character, Ballard shows that she still excels as a believably hardened, yet humane, agent (albeit of a slightly different variety).
