Edith Wharton could not complete The Buccaneers, leaving some things hanging in jeopardy, including the ultimate choice Nan St. George makes about her love life. Marion Mainwaring pieced together the unfinished novel and reached a satisfying conclusion for Nan. So, in the original novel, who does Nan St. George end up with? And is it consistent with the Apple TV adaptation?
Who does Nan choose in The Buccaneers Season 1 ending?
At the end of season 1 of The Buccaneers, the complicated love triangle between Nan, Theo, and Guy comes to a roaring conclusion as Guy confesses his love for Nan and the two engage in making love. But after learning Jinny’s story of abuse, Nan decides to marry Theo and become the Duchess of Tintagel. She also allowed Jinny and Guy to escape by doing this.
Though the series hinted that Theo was genuinely in love with Nan, he still seemed to have some villainous traits that were hard to ignore. So, at the end of season 1, Nan is married to Theo.
If the series sticks to the novel, there are more twists coming in the love story.
Who does Nan end up with in The Buccaneers book?
The story of the Apple TV+ show is consistent with the novel till the end of season 1. Even in the novels, Nan ends up marrying Theo. But after the marriage, the dynamic between Theo and Nan disintegrates quickly. The novel made it clear that the Dutch of Tintagel was only interested in the power he possessed and was not really in love with Nan. The book also revealed that he was gay.
Staying with the Dutch, Nan further realized that her feelings for Guy never disappeared. With some help from Miss Laura Testvalley, Nan and Guy ended up together at the end of The Buccaneers. They run away together, concluding their love story on a high note.
If the series continues to faithfully adapt the novel, Nan and Guy will eventually end up together.
