The new adaptation of Carrie has gotten an exciting update with a new behind-the-scenes image. Originally released in 1974, Carrie was Stephen King’s first published novel. The novel was adapted shortly after its release into the classic Brian De Palma horror movie of the same name. Carrie has since been reimagined as a TV movie in 2002 and another theatrical movie in 2013. A new version of Carrie is in the works from Mike Flanagan on Prime Video. Flanagan has worked on past King adaptations, including Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and the well-reviewed The Life of Chuck.
Now, in a new post on Instagram from Flanagan, it has been announced that Carrie has entered production. The image shows a clapperboard indicating that the series is now filming. Flanagan is shown as the director for the episode, which includes a rendering of the prom queen’s tiara. A costume is seen on the left side of the image, although it is unclear which character will wear it.

Flanagan Will Make Changes To The Source Material
Flanagan is currently the most prominent filmmaker adapting King’s work over the last decade. This has varied in accuracy to the source material, but has always maintained the spirit of the books. Gerald’s Game included more characters interacting with Carla Gugino’s Jessie, as the novel is a primarily solitary experience. Doctor Sleep was fairly faithful for the first two acts, until it changed act three to align with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The Life of Chuck is very close to adapting the short story beat-for-beat, subtracting only a few small moments and adding others for a cinematic experience.

The newest version of Carrie will be played by Summer H. Howell (Spirit in the Blood), following in the footsteps of Sissy Spacek and Chloë Grace Moretz. The new adaptation will bring Carrie into the modern age. This likely means the bullying Carrie endures will extend beyond just the schoolyard and enter the realm of social media and texting. Howell will be joined by other Flanagan regulars in Carrie, including Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White and Matthew Lillard as Principal Gayle.

The Themes Of Carrie Are Evergreen
Carrie is an interesting project for Flanagan, as up until this point, his King adaptations have never been translated before, with works that have often been considered unfilmable. Carrie is an undeniable classic in the horror film space, so the only way to approach it is to have a fresh take on the material. Given that the themes of Carrie involve isolation and bullying, the story is still relevant today. With a strong filmography proving Flanagan understands King’s works, Carrie should be a great watch.
