The live-action Teen Titans movie gets a new update from James Gunn as the DC Universe film is in the works. One of the more notable DCU announcements to emerge out of 2024 was that a Teen Titans film is actually in development, with Ana Nogueira penning the script for it. Given the considerable popularity behind the Teen Titans IP, there is a lot of excitement for the team’s big-screen debut.
As Gunn has been keeping fans updated on what rumors are or aren’t true, the DC Studios co-CEO recently got asked about a new report regarding casting for Teen Titans. After one fan asked if it was true that the Teen Titans film would start casting this fall, Gunn gave the following response on Threads:
Gunn explained that there is no truth to Teen Titans casting starting in the fall, as the Superman director commented, “That’s complete B.S.” The Teen Titans project would mark the second DCU film that Nogueira is writing for DC Studios, as she wrote the script for Milly Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie.
What James Gunn’s DCU Update Means For The Teen Titans Movie
James Gunn debunking the idea that DC Studios is starting to look at casting for Teen Titansin the fall serves as a great reminder about how fans should navigate rumors related to the DCU online. One of the big rules that Gunn has been very adamant about for DC Studios is that a project will not move forward until the script and vision for the story are complete. Gunn mentioned in February 2025 at a DC press event – which ScreenRant was in attendance for – that “Ana Nogueira has been writing a Teen Titans script for a little while,” but that doesn’t mean the film is fully greenlit yet.
The fact the Teen Titans movie doesn’t have a director attached to it or a release date set for it may mean that the screenplay for the team-up film is far from done, which would suggest casting is not going to happen anytime soon. Once the Teen Titans script is where it needs to be, further development can proceed from there, including looking for a director and then building the ensemble cast. That is also contingent on DC Studios finding the perfect vision for Teen Titans, as the project could easily get canceled if they don’t find a natural direction for it.

With the many rumors that quickly gain traction online in the superhero genre, it’s great to see Gunn still addressing inaccurate reports about the DC Universe, especially with something as big as a Teen Titans movie. However, the fact that Gunn didn’t say that Teen Titans is no longer happening is an exciting update in itself, as it means that they are still developing the script. Hopefully, there will be some positive updates on the Teen Titans film later in the fall that will ideally get DC Studios closer to starting to find a director.
